ETCI’s very first dinnerware product line – EARTHENS comes from a simple concept derived in rural India where villagers used materials abundantly available in nature for use in their households. One such material was the dried leaf sheath of the Areca palm tree. This hard, yet pliable material is used to make Earthens. For more features and benefits visit Why Earthens. Earthens are made from the leaf sheath of the Areca Palm tree found abundantly in nature. The leaf sheath is a ‘sheet-like’ material with thickness ranging between 1.50mm and 2.25mm; the sheet’s length is between 1 and 2.50 ft, and width between 0.8 to 1.4 ft. The sheath is found wrapped around the trunk of the palm trees and finer leaves sprout outward from the top of it. During autumn, the leaf and the sheath dry and fall to the ground, which when collected represents the raw material for making Earthens. The Areca leaf sheath is a strong pliable material that can be molded into various shapes and sizes. Its main constituents are: cellulose and crude fiber. It is hard and once converted into Earthens holds it physical integrity. Once collected and thoroughly cleansed, the pliable leaf sheath is molded under a temperature of a 100°C to convert it into an earthen. This process is also known as thermoforming and it serves a second purpose of sterilization as well. Such a high temperature kills all bacterial or microbial activity present on the material. No color, wax, or dye is used on the surface. The outer surface is normally dark brown and rough. The inner surface is smoother with natural grains, and a natural glossy finish. Earthens come in shades of cream, beige, and brown, most beautifully designed by Mother Nature herself. Thickness, color, and texture vary from plate-to-plate because it is natural. No pesticides are used to grow the Areca palm trees, making them organic in nature.
